April Ross
April Ross was one of just a handful of women beach volleyball players who have won medals during several Olympics. In Tokyo over the next several days she will attempt to claim her third Olympic medal with fellow first-time Olympian Alix Klineman. Ross hopes to win more than just her first Olympic medal. At 39, this could be her last chance to win the gold medal at an Olympics. However, she is certain of taking top honors. Ross on NBC Boston, said that when the team performs consistently or well they could win a gold. Also, I am going be relying on a little bit of good luck. Ross was born on August 22, 1982, at Costa Mesa California. She lived there with her family. At Newport Harbor High School, she played in a variety of different sports. She played basketball and ran track, in addition to her indoor volleyball achievements as a pre-collegiate athlete. But she clearly was an edge over the other players when it came to the second sport. In her time at high school, she played middle blocker outside hitter and setter at the tennis court as per her college bio. For her efforts she was awarded the 1999 Gatorade International Player of the year in Circle of Champions. The skills she showed in volleyball also brought her an Orange County Athlete of the Years trophy in the year 2000. Ross is working with Klineman from 2017, but Ross's beach game was well-established long before that. In actual, Ross has won several important tournaments throughout her career with two partners. One of them is a volleyball legend. In the period 2007-2013 she played with Jennifer Kessy who more recently was Klineman's coach. Ross, Kessy's fellow teammate who was the winner of the world championship together with Kessy in 2009, also was a major force on international stage. They were awarded a silver medal during the 2012 Olympic Games held in London. Misty Maytreanor (Jennings) as well as Misty Maytreanor clinched gold ahead of them. Ross was Walsh Jennings new partner after May-Treanor's retirement. They both went on to take home the bronze beach volleyball trophy at Rio Olympics 2016 with Walsh Jennings. Ross started her college career with the USC Trojans following graduation from high school. The Trojans were a few years away from when Ross went to the sand and turned pro. Her career was a success during her time in the college. In 2000, as a freshman she fought her way to Pac-10 and NCAA All-American Freshman of Year honors and earned an All-American. The team also saw her help in helping the Trojans reach into the Final Four. Her heart was broken by a personal tragedy during her sophomore years, yet she was able to make it an All-American once more. Through the two years she played for the Trojans they helped win consecutive championships. She was a fantastic player on the court, and was awarded the Honda Sports Award in 2003-04 as the best female volleyball player in the NCAA. Ross studied the field of international relations in USC. Margie Ross was not able to witness Ross achieve beach volleyball's top levels. Ross's mother passed away from cancer of the breast in 2001. Ross had just become a second-year student at USC. She continues to remember her deceased parent close and close. Margie continues to be an inspiration both on and off at the beach.
