Rosalia Vila Tobella[2] (born 25 September 1992),[3] known mononymously as Rosalia (Spanish: [rosa'li.a], Catalan: [ruz@'li.@]),[4][5][6] is a Spanish singer. [7][8] Born and raised on the suburbs of Barcelona, she was described as an "atypical pop singer" due to her genre-bending music styles. [9] She was captivated by Spanish folk music when she was only 13 years old. She was a musicologist at Catalonia College of Music and also performed at weddings. The project reinvented flamenco and mingled it with pop music and hip-hop music. The singles "Malamente" and "Pienso En Tu Mira" were popular among the Spanish public , and were met with widespread critical acclaim. 11) Winner of the Latin Grammy Award for Album of the Year and listed in Rolling stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time, El Mal Querer started the climb of Rosalia into the world music scene. Rosalia has scored ten number one songs throughout her career in her home country. This is the highest number for an artist hailing from the area. Two Grammy Awards, eleven Latin Grammy Awards (including two Album of the Year awards) and four MTV Video Music Awards and three UK Music Video Awards have been awarded to Rosalia. She also received two Premio Ruido Awards. Billboard has awarded her the Rising Star Award in 2019 for "changing the sound of mainstream music by bringing flamenco to pop"[18[18]. She was also the first singing Spanish artist to be nominated by the Grammys for Best New Artist.
Rosalia was born on 25 September 1992 in Sant Cugat del Valles and raised in Sant Esteve Sesrovires,[20][21][22] Baix Llobregat, Catalonia. Born into a family of no artistic background and is the youngest daughter of Pilar Tobella, a businesswoman who runs a small family company specialised in metalworks. Jose Manuel Vila was her father. He was born in Cudillero (Asturias). They divorced in 2019. Her older sister Pilar Vila who was born in 1989 is her stylist. Rosalia discovered her love for the performing arts as a young person especially after discovering the discography of Camaron de La Isla. Her musical education began in Taller de Musics. She completed a six-year program at the academy. She took classes at the Raval School, and later transferred to the Superior School of Music of Catalonia. She also independently sang as an individual at weddings and in bars with musical music in which she was paid "a barely over 80 euros or for dinner". Rosalia was capable of meeting many underground Spanish performers during that time such as La Zowi and Yung Beef, Kaydy Case, Hinds Maria Escarmiento, Kaydy Cain.
